ISO 9001 vs AS9100: The Essential Difference

ISO 9001 vs AS9100 is a critical question for aerospace manufacturers and suppliers. AS9100 is not a separate standard — it is ISO 9001 with additional aerospace-specific requirements added on top. Every AS9100-certified organization is also compliant with ISO 9001, but the reverse is not true.

What Is AS9100?

AS9100 Rev D is the quality management standard for the aviation, space, and defense (AS&D) industry. Published by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), it incorporates all of ISO 9001:2015 requirements and adds approximately 100 additional requirements specific to aerospace manufacturing and services.

AS9100 covers everything in ISO 9001 plus:

  • Product and process risk management (beyond ISO 9001's general risk approach)

  • First article inspection (FAI)

Who Needs AS9100?

AS9100 certification is typically required when:

  • You supply directly to aerospace primes (Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, etc.)
  • Your customer's purchase orders or quality requirements reference AS9100
  • You are on an approved supplier list (ASL) that requires AS9100
  • You manufacture safety-critical aerospace components or assemblies
  • You provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for aircraft

ISO 9001 alone is generally not sufficient for direct aerospace supply chain participation. Most tier-1 and tier-2 aerospace suppliers require AS9100.

Who Needs ISO 9001 (Not AS9100)?

ISO 9001:2026 is appropriate when:

  • You supply to non-aerospace industries (automotive, medical, general manufacturing)
  • Your aerospace customer does not require AS9100 specifically
  • You are a service provider or distributor (not a manufacturer)
  • You want a quality management foundation before pursuing AS9100

Many organizations hold both certifications — ISO 9001 for general business and AS9100 for aerospace customers.

How ISO 9001:2026 Affects AS9100

AS9100 Rev D is currently based on ISO 9001:2015. The IAQG is expected to release AS9100 Rev E based on ISO 9001:2026, but the timeline has not been confirmed as of August 2026.

Key implications:

  • AS9100 Rev D certified organizations are compliant with ISO 9001:2015, not ISO 9001:2026
  • When AS9100 Rev E is published, it will incorporate ISO 9001:2026's new requirements (quality culture, opportunities, climate change consideration)
  • Organizations certified to AS9100 Rev D will need to transition to Rev E once it is published
  • The transition timeline for AS9100 Rev E will be set by the IAQG, not ISO

Warning

Important:: AS9100 Rev D is still based on ISO 9001:2015. If your customer requires ISO 9001:2026 compliance specifically, AS9100 Rev D alone does not satisfy that requirement. Confirm with your customer which standard version they require.

AS9100 Core Tools and Requirements Not in ISO 9001

AS9100 requires several tools and processes that ISO 9001 does not:

Configuration Management — tracking and controlling product configurations, drawings, and specifications throughout the product lifecycle.

First Article Inspection (FAI) — formal verification that the first production article conforms to all design requirements before series production begins.

Key Characteristics — identification of product or process characteristics where variation significantly affects fit, form, function, performance, service life, or manufacturability.

Counterfeit Parts Prevention — documented processes to prevent the use of counterfeit or fraudulent parts in aerospace products.

Product Safety — requirements for identifying and managing product safety risks throughout design, manufacturing, and service.

Does AS9100 replace ISO 9001?

AS9100 incorporates all of ISO 9001, so AS9100 certification satisfies ISO 9001 requirements. You do not need a separate ISO 9001 certificate if you hold AS9100.

Can a non-aerospace company get AS9100 certified?

Technically yes, but it is unusual and rarely required. AS9100 is designed for the aviation, space, and defense industry.

Is AS9100 harder to get than ISO 9001?

Yes. AS9100 has approximately 100 additional requirements beyond ISO 9001, requires more extensive documentation, and typically takes longer and costs more to certify.

When will AS9100 Rev E be published?

The IAQG has not confirmed a publication date for AS9100 Rev E as of August 2026. Monitor the IAQG website (iaqg.org) for updates.

What is the difference between AS9100, AS9110, and AS9120?

AS9100 covers manufacturers. AS9110 covers maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organizations. AS9120 covers distributors and stockists.
