Concise answer

ISO 9001:2026 configuration management questions benefit from two distinct sources. ISO 9001:2026 provides quality management system requirements. ISO 10007:2017 adds guidance on configuration management within an organization, supporting products and services from concept to disposal. That guidance does not, by itself, become a mandatory ISO 9001 procedure or an extra certification condition. 11https://www.iso.org/standard/9001 22https://www.iso.org/standard/70400.html

This ISO 9001 and ISO 10007 comparison separates requirements from supporting guidance. ISO identifies ISO 9001:2026 as the published sixth edition, released on 16 September 2026. This is a postpublication discussion, not a forecast of future requirements. For requirement-level decisions, use the published standard; our official-edition access guideofficial-edition access guide/article/how-to-get-iso-9001-2026-official-edition explains where to start. 11https://www.iso.org/standard/9001

ISO 10007 configuration management: what it adds

Think of the practical configuration question as: Which version, with which agreed features, are we discussing? A current drawing alone may not answer that if the packing list, instructions, and item identifiers describe different variants. This is a plain-language illustration, not an ISO definition.

ISO/TC 176 says ISO 10007 first outlines responsibilities and authorities. It then describes planning, configuration identification, change control, configuration status accounting, and configuration audit. Those are the publicly identified subjects of the guidance—not a prescribed checklist supplied by this article. 33https://committee.iso.org/sites/tc176/home/projects/published/iso-10007-2017.html

In an everyday review, these subjects prompt connected questions: What are we identifying? Who can decide a change? Where can someone see the current status? How will we check that the relevant information agrees? Configuration management planning brings those questions together before a disagreement becomes harder to untangle. Configuration change control concerns the change question; configuration status accounting concerns the status question. These are plain-language descriptions, not controlled definitions.

The value is the relationship between the information, not simply collecting more documents. The quality-plans and ISO 10005 guidequality-plans and ISO 10005 guide/article/iso-9001-2026-quality-plans-iso-10005 addresses a different question: guidance for a quality plan. The project-quality and ISO 10006 guideproject-quality and ISO 10006 guide/article/iso-9001-2026-project-quality-iso-10006 addresses quality management in projects. Neither topic should replace the configuration question.

Example: two versions of a display stand

Stay Current

ISO 9001:2026 is published. Get source-checked updates and practical decision aids.

Imagine a company supplying exhibition display stands with narrow or wide shelves and black or silver rails. A wide-shelf order carries the right variant label, but its packing list names narrow shelves. The assembly leaflet has no variant reference.

The initial issue is not whether the documents look tidy. It is whether the team can establish which configuration the order refers to and how its associated information fits together.

A useful discussion would identify the intended variant, find the relevant agreed information, and ask who owns any correction or change. The team could then decide how to make the variant and current information easier to recognize at the next handoff. Looking across the product and service lifecycle, it could ask how that identity will remain understandable when a customer later requests replacement parts.

This is an original illustration of a configuration question, not a technical assessment or an ISO-required record format. It makes no claim about the stand's performance or acceptance.

A four-step configuration-question screen

Use this original editorial screen to prepare a focused review. It is not an ISO procedure or a certification checklist.

1. Name the configuration question

Identify the product or service and the particular version or variant causing uncertainty. Replace “our documents are confusing” with a concrete question, such as “Which shelf variant belongs to this order?”

2. Locate the disagreement

Identify the information that does not agree. Is the issue an unclear identifier, an unresolved change, or uncertainty about current status? In the example, the variant label and packing list conflict. Keep the question narrow enough for someone to investigate.

3. Select the right source

Use the table below to separate requirements from guidance and local decisions. Consult the controlled editions when the question needs detail beyond the public descriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ISO 10007 the same as ISO 9001?

No. ISO 9001:2026 is the QMS requirements standard. ISO 10007:2017 provides configuration-management guidance. Their different roles are the starting point for using them sensibly. 11https://www.iso.org/standard/9001 22https://www.iso.org/standard/70400.html

Must every ISO 9001 organization adopt an ISO 10007 procedure?

ISO 10007's public description as guidance does not establish that obligation. Check actual requirements against the controlled ISO 9001:2026 edition rather than turning a related guidance document into a universal rule.

Is configuration management only about products?

No. ISO's ISO 10007 abstract explicitly includes support of products and services from concept to disposal. The physical-product example here illustrates one setting, not the whole scope. 22https://www.iso.org/standard/70400.html

Does a configuration audit mean an ISO 9001 certification audit?

Do not equate them. ISO/TC 176 lists configuration audit within ISO 10007's guidance subjects. That listing does not establish an additional ISO 9001 certification audit. Ask your certification body about your organization's certification arrangements. 33https://committee.iso.org/sites/tc176/home/projects/published/iso-10007-2017.html 11https://www.iso.org/standard/9001
