Direct answer: start with the question, not the test
ISO 10017 statistical techniques guidance can help you explore which techniques may suit a quality-management question. It does not teach you how to use them. Start statistical question routing by separating the data question from the requirements question and the method-use question. 1
A useful first response to “Which test do we need?” is “What are we trying to learn?” Define that before selecting a test, chart or software package.
Reader snapshot: Classify the question, define what the data represent, check the missing context, and hand it to the appropriate source and owner.
ISO 10017 and ISO 9001: keep the editions visible
ISO lists ISO 10017:2021 as published, Edition 1, with publication date 2021-07. Its current stage is “International Standard under systematic review [90.20]”, as checked on November 6, 2026. Review status does not identify a published replacement. 1
Its catalogue title is Quality management — Guidance on statistical techniques for ISO 9001:2015. The abstract also refers to a quality management system, or QMS, in conformity with ISO 9001:2015. Keep that reference intact when describing this source. 1
ISO 9001:2026 is now the published sixth edition, and ISO lists ISO 9001:2015 as withdrawn. ISO's current business overview connects quality management with better decisions. That provides today's reader context; it does not rewrite ISO 10017's catalogue reference. 2 3

Statistical technique selection is different from using a method
Stay Current
ISO 9001:2026 is published. Get source-checked updates and practical decision aids.
The ISO/TC 176/SC 3 portfolio lists ISO 10017 among supporting standards. Its linked committee overview names techniques including descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, sampling and time series analysis. It says technique descriptions include benefits, limitations, cautions and application examples. These are subjects to examine, not instructions to apply every technique. 4 5
The catalogue's boundary is clear: the document gives selection guidance but does not provide guidance on using the techniques. Keep selection versus use separate. A relevant technique name is not yet a suitable local analysis plan. 1
A four-step statistical question routing framework
This is an original editorial reading aid. It is not an ISO procedure, a statistical test selector or a software specification.
1. Classify what you need to know
For quantitative data questions, say whether you want to describe results, compare groups, examine change over time, or investigate a possible relationship. Quantitative data means information expressed as numbers.
Distinguish these from “What does ISO require?” and “How do we perform this analysis?” Those questions need different sources. Keep the question before technique so a familiar tool does not define the task.
2. Define what each observation represents
Write down the process, unit of observation, period and groups included. An observation could be one completed repair, not one customer or one daily total.
Ask how values were recorded. Do timestamps include waiting time? Are repeat visits counted separately? If definitions differ between groups, flag that before treating the groups as comparable.
3. Make the missing context visible
Check for missing records, changed collection practices and different types of work. Identify assumptions, meaning things the proposed analysis would take as true.
State statistical analysis limits in ordinary language. A record may describe included jobs without representing all jobs. A pattern may prompt investigation without establishing its cause.
These are preparation questions, not rules quoted from ISO 10017. For the broader evidence conversation, see the evidence-based decision-making guide.
4. Prepare a statistical method handoff
Give the responsible reviewer the question, data definitions, known gaps and intended decision. Ask what further information is needed before selecting and using a method.
Route statistical technique guidance to ISO 10017. Route detailed QMS requirements to the published ISO 9001 text. Route method-use questions to suitable technical references and someone able to assess the analysis.
If the gap concerns people's capability, the ISO 10015 competence guide offers a separate source screen. It does not set qualifications for a statistical analyst.
Which question belongs with which source?
Use this table to prepare the next conversation. It does not select a technique or establish that one is required.
| Question being asked | Starting source or owner | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Which statistical approaches might help answer this data question? | ISO 10017:2021 selection guidance, with the scoped question. 1 | Local suitability, data assumptions and the eventual choice. |
| How should we perform and check the chosen analysis? | Appropriate method-use references and a capable technical reviewer. | Calculations, assumptions, interpretation and software suitability. |
| What does ISO 9001:2026 require here? | The published requirements text and the responsible QMS owner. 2 | Detailed interpretation and application to the organization. |
| Can these records answer our question? | Original records and the process or data owner. | Missing observations, inconsistent definitions and the population represented. |
Hypothetical example: a bicycle repair workshop
Imagine a workshop asking whether turnaround times changed after it introduced a new booking system. Someone suggests buying statistical software immediately.
The first question is narrower: what counts as turnaround time? Booking-to-collection and arrival-to-completion measure different intervals. The workshop also handles quick adjustments and repairs awaiting parts.
The owner could prepare a handoff identifying the interval, job categories and observation period. They could flag missing timestamps and any change in how completion was recorded.
ISO 10017 would be a selection-guidance source for exploring relevant approaches. The actual method-use question would remain with the technical reviewer and appropriate references. The hypothetical workshop has not yet established comparability, selected a test or demonstrated improvement.
Editorial takeaway: A precise handoff is more useful than an unsupported technique name. It makes clear what the analysis would answer and what would remain unresolved.
For a broader edition review, the email-gated ISO 9001 transition checklist is available as a planning resource. It is not an ISO 10017 method guide or evidence that a statistical technique is mandatory. Check any requirements claim against the published text.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does ISO 10017 statistical techniques guidance cover?
ISO's abstract describes guidelines for selecting appropriate statistical techniques useful in developing, implementing, maintaining and improving a QMS. Its stated reference is ISO 9001:2015. 1
Does ISO 10017 teach me how to run a statistical test?
No. The public abstract explicitly says it does not provide guidance on how to use the statistical techniques. Use suitable method-specific references for that separate task. 1
Does this guide establish a mandatory test or software package?
No. It routes questions and sources without prescribing either. A claim about a 2026 requirement needs support from the published requirements text, not this editorial framework.
Is ISO 10017:2021 withdrawn because ISO 9001:2015 is withdrawn?
The records show different statuses. ISO 10017:2021 is published and under systematic review; ISO 9001:2015 is withdrawn. Do not transfer one document's status to another. 1 2
What should I send to a reviewer before choosing a technique?
Send the question, what each observation represents, the collection period, relevant groups and known gaps. Explain the intended decision without assuming the analysis will prove a cause or outcome.
